Sell your tractor / Tractor owner guides
Subcompact vs compact: which tractor should you buy?
The best tractor to buy is the one sized for the hardest job you'll do regularly. Most people who end up selling bought for the easy jobs, or for jobs they never ended up doing.
Mostly mowing and light chores on a few acres: a subcompact is usually enough. Brush hogging, grading gravel, moving heavy material, or working wet, heavy ground on more land: a compact will be less frustrating.
Subcompact and compact, side by side
These are rough ranges. Specs vary by model, so always compare the actual numbers for the tractors you're considering.
| Subcompact | Compact | |
|---|---|---|
| Horsepower | Roughly 20–25 | Roughly 25–60 |
| Loader | Light lifting: mulch, gravel, small loads | Heavier lifting: logs, pallets, full buckets of wet dirt |
| Mowing | Often has a mid-mount deck for lawns | Usually pulls a rotary cutter for pasture and brush |
| Size | Fits many garages, gates, and tight spaces | Wider, taller, heavier; needs more room and a bigger trailer |
| Good for | Big lawns, gardens, light loader work, a few acres | Pasture, brush, driveways, heavier loader and backhoe work, more acreage |
| Examples | Kubota BX, John Deere 1 Series, Mahindra eMAX, Kioti CS, LS MT1, New Holland Workmaster 25S, Yanmar SA, Bad Boy subcompacts | Kubota B and L, John Deere 2 and 3 Series, Mahindra 1600 and 2600, Kioti CK and DK, LS MT2 and MT3, New Holland Boomer, Yanmar YM, Bad Boy compacts |
Five questions to answer before you buy
- What's the hardest job you'll do every month? Not the easiest one, and not the one you might do someday. Size the tractor for that job.
- How much land, and what kind? Acreage matters, but so does what's on it: lawn, pasture, brush, or woods.
- How wet and heavy is your ground? Much of Southwest Louisiana is clay that stays soft after rain. Light tractors can struggle to pull or push in it. Four-wheel drive and the right tires (turf, industrial, or ag) make a big difference.
- Where will it live? Measure your shed door and gates before you shop.
- How will you move it? Check the tractor's weight with loader and implements against your trailer and truck.
The attachments decide a lot
Most people buy a tractor for what the attachments do. A front end loader, backhoe, mower deck, box blade, or rotary cutter each has a size and weight that suits a certain class of tractor. If the attachment you need most is too much for a subcompact, you need a compact, no matter what the price tag says.
